Feature

CWC Feature -  Mentor Alison Bruce

Alison Bruce’s first lessons in writing craft came from listening to her own early stories being read aloud by her sister. Every spelling mistake, every grammar glitch and let’s not forget the logic gaps, were lovingly pointed out and accompanied by hysterical laughter–most of it from Alison. She learned three things from this. One, reading aloud is the best way of spotting problems. Two, laughter is the best way of getting through embarrassment. Three, if she was ever a writing mentor, she’d balance lessons one and two with more positive reinforcement.

She started editing and mentoring fellow students at university. Later, through her involvement with the Guelph Star Trek Club, she designed and facilitated writing and creativity workshops for summer camp and at conventions. So far, the people Alison has mentored have been happy with the results. One has a book contract.

Copywriter and editor since 1992, Alison has also been a comic book store manager, small press publisher,  web designer... All this is after attaining an honours degree in history and philosophy. She is the author of the Carmedy and Garrett mystery series and also writes historical western adventures.
