Mentee FAQs

Do I have to be a member of the Crime Writers of Canada? Yes. This program is a benefit exclusively for CWC Associate Members in good standing. If you are not yet a member, you can learn more about joining on our Membership Benefits Page.

Can I apply if my manuscript isn't finished? No. To ensure you receive the most effective feedback on structure and marketability, this program is exclusively for completed manuscripts.

What genres are accepted? We accept all sub-genres of Crime and Mystery, including, but not limited to, Cozy, Noir, Thriller, Police Procedural, Historical Mystery, and True Crime.

What exactly will my mentor do? Your mentor will provide a high-level critique of your 5,000-word sample and offer professional guidance on your three specific questions. They act as a "compass" for your career—helping you understand the writing process, industry standards, and your next steps toward publication.

Is this a line-editing or proofreading service? No. Mentors do not provide grammar checks, typo corrections, or line-by-line edits for your entire manuscript. Instead, they focus on "structural" elements like pacing, character development, and plot consistency, as well as career advice.

How often will we meet? The program features a structured three-meeting format: an initial goal-setting session, a mid-point progress review, and a concluding review. Any additional communication is by mutual agreement.

How am I matched with a mentor? The CWC Mentorship Committee carefully reviews your sub-genre, your publishing goals, and your "Statement of Purpose" to match you with a professional author whose expertise aligns with your needs.

What if I don't get matched? We often have more applicants than available mentors. If you aren't matched this time, don't be discouraged! It often simply means we didn't have a mentor available in your specific sub-genre for this session. We encourage you to keep writing and apply for the next cycle.

When do I pay the $25 fee? You only pay the fee if you are selected and paired with a mentor. There is no cost to submit an application. Once you receive your "Welcome Email," you will be given instructions on how to pay the fee to confirm your spot.

Will my mentor help me get an agent or a book deal? While your mentor may help you hone your query materials and understand the industry, they cannot act as an agent or guarantee a publishing contract. The goal of the program is to give you the tools to navigate these steps successfully on your own.

Can I keep in touch with my mentor after the eight weeks? The formal mentorship commitment ends after eight weeks. While many pairs choose to stay in touch as professional peers, there is no obligation for the mentor to provide further feedback once the program concludes.
