A Conversation with Lorna Poplak

Lorna Poplak talks about her book THE DON: The Story of Toronto's Infamous Jail, published by Dundurn Press and nominated by Crime Writers Canada for The Brass Knuckles Award for Best Nonfiction Crime Book. About the author Born in South Africa, Lorna majored in law at university, but her love of the written word led her to study English literature and take an Honours degree in French. After a diploma in library science, Lorna moved to Canada and into the field of information technology. Then, as now, Lorna enjoyed exploring her new country by car, bike, and on foot. Lorna’s second non-fiction book, THE DON: The Story of Toronto’s Infamous Jail, was published by Dundurn Press in January 2021. In addition to bringing to light the facts behind its location and construction, THE DON is the saga of the people who have interacted with the historic jail during its one-hundred-and-fifty-plus years of existence – inmates, guards, governors, gangs, officials, and even a pair of star-crossed lovers. The Don’s early promise was never fulfilled. The book documents its tumultuous descent from palace to hellhole to its eventual shuttering and rebirth.

A Conversation with Jackie Elliot

BC author, Jackie Elliott discusses her novel, Hell's Half Acre, which has been nominated for the Awards of Excellence Whodunit Award for Best Traditional Mystery.

About the Author

Jackie is originally from the UK, but she settled on Vancouver Island, Canada in 2004. She’s married to Bob, a commercial fisherman and accomplished storyteller – like most fishermen!

It was a culture shock to swap a fast-paced city life for Island living. It wasn’t at all how Jackie had expected. She was intrigued by the pioneer spirit of their small communities, and the fight to hang on to traditional ways of living. In her experience, small towns ‘with a heart’ have claws and teeth as well and that makes the perfect back drop for a good murder!

Jackie is the author of the best-selling Coffin Cove Mystery series, set in an isolated fishing town on Vancouver Island.

She is also the author of “Sober Ever After”, her best -selling memoir and other non-fiction books.

A Conversation with Melisaa Yi

Melissa Yi discusses her story, Dead Man's Hand, which has been shortlisted for The Crime Writers Canada's Awards of Excellence, Best Short Crime Story.

About the Author

Melissa Yi could slice your throat and sew it back up again. Legally. Because she’s an emergency doctor.

In her spare minutes, Melissa writes the Hope Sze medical crime series, which Ellery Queen praised for its “nitty-gritty” description and Publishers Weekly for its “darker themes … entertaining and insightful.” Kirkus considers Hope Sze a “modern heroine,” the CBC calls her a “must-read,” and The Globe and Mail praises her as a “standout,” having written a best Canadian suspense novel.

Melissa’s mystery stories were finalists for the Arthur Ellis Award (best crime story in Canada) and the Derringer Award (best crime story in the English language) and longlisted for the Staunch Prize (best feminist thriller worldwide).

But that’s not all! Because all ER doctors have some form of ADHD (joking. Sort of), Melissa also writes romance and YA. Under the name Melissa Yuan-Innes, she writes the Unfeeling Doctor memoir series as well as fantasy and science fiction for which she won a Writers of the Future Award.
